A Day in the Life of an Auckland BAS grad

A Day in the Life of Auckland BAS graduate Alan KC

No two days in Business Advisory Services are the same and that’s part of what makes it a great career! Here, Alan KC provides a day-long look at what a BAS graduate role involves, from solving real business problems to learning on the job and being part of a supportive team at Baker Tilly Staples Rodway Auckland.

6.00am: I wake up early to get in a bit of personal time before grabbing a quick bite to eat and preparing for a day full of opportunity. I am only a 10-minute walk from the office, so I often enjoy the morning air on my way in.

8.30am: Once I arrive, I head to the fridge to store my lunch and grab my laptop, greeting any co-workers I see along the way. I then go to my desk. After logging in, I check my emails and workflow spreadsheet to ensure I am organised and on top of my to-do list. Once everything has been reviewed, I’ll often meet a few of the boys for coffee before the meetings I have planned.

9.00am: I have back-to-back meetings with the BAS Cup Committee and the BAS Innovation team, where we go over notes regarding event planning, AI integration within the firm, and overall improvements to BAS processes. This is a great way for me to stay up to date with the upcoming AI improvements being applied, not just within our firm but likely across the country.

10.30am: I get stuck into my work, which usually includes GST returns, income tax returns and compliance for a variety of clients. Today, I am working for one of our larger clients in the forestry industry, which has required me to adapt and problem-solve, as the processes for this client differ from our usual compliance jobs.

12.30pm: Lunch time arrives, and I enjoy a nice home-cooked meal while catching up with my co-workers. We normally spend this time joking around and laughing, which provides a nice change of pace from work.

1.30pm: I continue working through the afternoon, completing the tasks mentioned above.

2.30pm: I prepare for my third and final meeting of the day – a formal coffee catch-up with my BAS team. This is always a great opportunity to connect with colleagues, from graduate level through to directors, as we discuss team targets and upcoming deadlines.

5.00pm: Before wrapping up, I make sure everything is saved and that my timesheet and workflow spreadsheet are fully updated, ready for the next day. Most evenings, I walk along Albert Street while listening to some music to relax after a long day at work.
